Recently, I have been working on my digital portfolio for potential employers, and I have had a hard time creating the best format. Through research, and trial & error, I believe I have. To apologize in advance, I am not sure if I want to share all my secrets, but I will share a few tips that will help you create your ideal portfolio.

Convert Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Images, Web Pages and other files to PDF using FreePDFCovert. Converting files to PDFs is the best solution to creating the best digital portfolio.

So, you have converted your files to PDF. However, you may want to merge or split them.

You can download the Adolix Split & Merge PDF software for free, and be able to split and merge your files. There is a trick though. One can only merge five PDF files at a time, so if you have 20 files, do not worry. Simply merge five files at a time, which will give you four COMBINED PDF files. Then simply merge those four files together to attain your final solution!

Now that I have taught you how to Convert, Split, and Merge PDFs, I am going to teach you how to convert a PDF file into a Microsoft office document.

Have you ever seen a PDF file, that you wish you could edit and use for your own purposes. Now you can.

PDFtoWord allows you to convert your PDF file to word, and have it sent to your desired email address. It may take a couple of hours, but it is worth it!

I hope my tips will help you along the way to creating your portfolio, or any other publication you hope to create! It definitely has helped me! If you know of any faster or better solutions, feel free to comment!

“On October 18, 2009… I found my heroes.”

Back in August of last year, I was in Books-A-Million, looking for some inspirational books to read in my spare time. In my search, I ended up in the “Music” section where I came across this book entitled, “25 Albums That Rocked The World”. It was, essentially, the publication’s, Omnibus Press, opinion on the 25 most culturally influenced albums ever created, with a detailed summary of each album and its impact. It was only $15 dollars, so I decided to pick it up.

Listed were some of the obvious choices: The Beatles “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band”, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller, Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”, and other albums by musical icons such as Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, and U2.

Also listed was this band I never heard of before called Radiohead. Their album, “Ok Computer” was released in 1997, and was the most recent album listed. How can an album released so recently be compared to giants such as “Thriller” or “Sgt. Pepper” who have stood the test of time, and why have I never heard of them before?

Well, I did not put that much thought into it. However, if you are familiar with Robin William’s theory of the Joshua Tree, once you are conscious of something, you start to see it everywhere. Well, I started hearing Radiohead’s name everywhere I went from in dialogue of others, on television, music boards, you name it. So, I thought to myself. who is Radiohead?

On October 18, 2009, I decided to listen to the album. That day, I found my heroes.

I remember the exact location. It was a Sunday; I was outside, by a lake on Georgia Southern’s campus, with my MP3 player. I pressed play, and sunk in the entire album from start to finish. All I remember hearing was noise. I had no idea what they were saying, or what the hell the words, “OK Computer”, had to do with the album, but that noise, that noise. It was pure bliss, feeling omnipotent. I have never been so moved.

After that day, I decided to study and decipher the meaning of the album, which I am still doing today. It is a task that will probably never be conquered. Never has a collection of music sound so ambiguous, but yet, more than fulfilling.

I do not feel I have enough music knowledge to properly or fairly give a critic opinion of the album, so I will say this, It is awesome.

My favorite tracks are the “Bohemian Rhapsody” inspired, “Paranoid Android”, and the therapeutic track, “Let Down”. Also, I have never heard an interlude so necessary to an album’s existence than “Fitter Happier”, which discusses the laws humans must “live by” to remain normal. Spoken by a computer-like voice, the voice starts to crash by the end of the interlude conveying that it is almost impossible to live by the mundane rules that society put on human beings, without going crazy once in a while. The interlude holds the most weight behind the meaning of the album’s title.

I also own Radiohead’s “Kid A” and “In Rainbows” which are brilliant in their own right, but OK Computer takes the cake. I may be speaking in ignorance, but I believe this is the greatest album ever made.

Thankyou Radiohead.

The cover letter is one of the most important pieces one can create in search of their dream job. However, as much as you love the cover letter, I am not sure if it loves us back.

The cover letter is one of those pieces, that you hate to write. Writing one can sometimes feel gruesome and overwhelming; however, with the right tools and perseverance, you can create the ideal cover letter that will allow you to stand out from the crowd.

In a nutshell, the cover letter is a persuasive letter of interest that will help market yourself and explain, “Why they should hire you?”

I will give you all my top 5 tips in writing a successful cover letter!

5. Strong Closing! This is the last thing they will remember you by. Show that you have initiative and persistence. Don’t be afraid to mention, “I look forward to receiving an interview from you”, or “I will be contacting you soon to schedule an interview.” This shows that you have a strong interest in receiving the job.

4. Send to an Actual Recipient. The days of “To Whom it May Concern” are long. Being specific to who you send it to, whether it is the Internship Coordinator or Human Resources director shows that you went out of your way to find out who will actually review your resume/cover letter. Don’t be afraid to ask for the these persons names. It also will not hurt to include a reference, whether it is the company’s secretary or someone heavily affiliated with the company.

3. Be Specific! In your body, mention exactly what you will offer, but be careful to only mention your skills that pertain to the job you are seeking. If you interested in a PR firm, your knowledge in deciphering electrical engineer codes will not be necessary. Mention specific experiences that displayed your many skills that you could offer. Also, be specific in what you know about the company and how you can contribute to their company culture.

2. Attention-Grabbing Introduction. The introduction should briefly state the position that one is seeking, and should immediately catch the employer’s interest. If the introduction is stale, they may not read the rest. Find a creative way to explain why you are interested in that particular job or field.

1. GRAMMAR! One of the biggest things that employers seek, but do not advertise, is for potential employees that sound intelligent and smart. Writing is a skill that will never go out of style. It is important for one to create a profound and cleverly-written piece that shows off their sense of style and character.

I hope my tips were helpful.

Other tips:

1. Use the same header that you use on your resume to create conformity.

2. Send a follow-up cover letter if you have not heard back from the company in 2-3 weeks.
